Emily as the Effect of the Goodbye Itself

Darren C. Demaree

You left flowers
& even though you had trimmed them
already, I angled my scissors
towards the marble slab
of the countertop
& clicked to something those cutters
until the beautiful lesson
became clear to me. Neither of us
needed to freshen the bouquet,
but we both wanted to
& that disregard for old, dry cells
is why you left to begin with
& why I kept cutting until there was
only the disrepair of the bloom.
